Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Plantersville, Alabama. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers in every city across the nation equipped to administer it. The requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body in many cases. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common component of drug screening processes. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probationers. A key advantage of hair drug testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and difficult to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for recent use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's beneficial to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If there’s no scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial process of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for court validity. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation process.

If the Screening phase hints at a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Cheating is highly improbable: Cheating during a hair drug test is extremely hard, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Although sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
