Accredited Drug Testing offers full-scale hair follicle drug assessments in Childersburg, Alabama. Whether you require a hair test for substances or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide, including every city, to conduct such tests. For accuracy, it's essential to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts. Hair analysis can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and is customizable for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method in drug screenings. This shift is noticeable among employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts, who now lean towards hair testing over traditional urine tests. Such tests are ideal for entities enforcing strict drug-use policies. The significant advantage lies in the extended detection span of up to 90 days, collected under observation and resistant to tampering. However, for recent substance use, within five days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained reputation as a potent means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal an alcohol and drug detection window extending to roughly 3 months. Gathering hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, constituting the optimal specimen for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests with panels exceeding 10, a quantity of 150mg from the specimen is suggested. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable volume of body hair can be substituted. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step assures the sample was suitably sealed and delivered, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Though a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated to be court-admissible. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive at Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening presents the highest challenge in execution.

Confirmation of any screening positive is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Should it be required, presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and follows the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can disclose drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection scope.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug consumption, beyond mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs than alternate methods.
  • Result variance: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth disparity can alter the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the subcutaneous hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Childersburg, AL, lies in its superior detection capabilities. Hair analysis offers a longer window, detecting past drug use that urine tests might miss. This extended detection period provides a more comprehensive substance history, aiding employers in maintaining strict drug policies with clarity and confidence.

When comparing hair follicle vs. urine tests, hair analysis prevails due to its reliability and ability to uncover drug usage over successive months. This advantage is crucial for environments prioritizing zero-tolerance, thereby maintaining workplace integrity and safety.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
