At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Pleasant Gap, Alabama. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in this type of testing and operate centers nationwide to administer it. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body to be tested. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more, offering customized options.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has become increasingly common for drug detection. Many companies, legal institutions, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers. The key advantage is its extended detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection making it nearly impossible to falsify results. However, for tracing drug use within the most recent five days, urine testing remains the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely regarded as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol use. With hair, one can capture a comprehensive chronicle of drugs and alcohol due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug presence. The collection process for hair is straightforward, comparatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a standard #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For extended tests such as EtG and those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unattainable, equivalent body hair may be substituted. It should be noted that head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encapsulates all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into a lab’s system, ensuring it was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although this is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Any samples testing positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at a notably lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral swab), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive initially are cleansed before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug testing can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Compromising a hair drug test is extremely challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers insight into patterns: It can indicate long-term substance use trends over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Substances become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often misused as it evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
