Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Plevna, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available across numerous cities nationwide to administer the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recent trends indicate a rise in employing hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This test is chosen by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The main advantage lies in its 90-day drug use detection capability, observed collection process, and strong resistance to tampering. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for a period of up to about three months. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment from about 200 strands of hair nearest the scalp yields around 100mg, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair denote only scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the analytical process of drug test results, which are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial reception of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody methodology.

Screening conducts a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While it serves as an economical measure to screen out drug usage in most cases, a positive result here must be verified to be legally valid. Samples indicating presumptive positives at Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are separated from the hair at concentrations much lower than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to perform.

To confirm any positive results from Screening, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary cleaning before confirmation. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can expose drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Reports historical use: It reveals patterns of substance use over extended durations rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to incur higher costs than other testing modalities.
  • Possible variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal variances in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
