Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Point Clear, Alabama. When hair or alcohol tests are needed, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair evaluation, with locations in every city nationwide that can execute such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for these analyses, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing choices.

Nowadays, drug testing methods increasingly favor using a hair follicle test. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are adopted by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those managing individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended period of drug use detection, usually up to 90 days, achieved through an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has become recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance usage by encasing biomarkers within the threads of the hair shaft as it grows. When obtained near the root, hair is capable of presenting nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the root will yield 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The four principal stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This process verifies that the specimen was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as the initial rapid assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening economically helps to rule out drug consumption in most cases, a positive result in Screening needs verification for it to be legally admissible. Each sample with a presumptive positive in Screening demands further confirmation.

Should a specimen show a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most complex approach to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a trend in substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth may impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
