In Randolph, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in these tests, we offer convenient testing centers across various cities nationwide for your hair or alcohol testing needs. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head or body. Our hair tests can be configured to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly popular for drug detection in recent years. Many employers, judicial courts, and substance abuse experts now favor this method over traditional urine tests. Entities with no drug use tolerance policies, such as companies, legal courts, and probation services, prefer hair tests. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, combined with its observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine testing remains the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When taken near the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use up to roughly three months prior. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (approximate diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing. For EtG, extra panels, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the method of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This process checks for proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and fills in any data entry gaps not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug misuse. Though cost-effective for negating drug presence in most cases, a positive screen needs verification for legal acceptance. Samples flagged as potentially positive at this phase require further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation for positive screens utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All suspect samples are washed ahead of confirmation when necessary. The laboratory cycle, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests trace drug use up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to evade: The test's nature makes deception highly unlikely, ensuring reliability.
  • Offers historic insights: It maps a timeline of drug use, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Metrics such as hair hue and personal hair growth variability can influence metabolite concentrations in hair strands.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
