Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing services in Rock Mills, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair analysis and numerous nationwide facilities ensure comprehensive testing options. Typically, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the crown or body. Our hair tests encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor the hair follicle approach. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests for their zero-tolerance policies, offering advantages over standard urine tests. This method is indispensable for employers, courts, and probation monitoring. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for substances. Collection is straightforward, altering the sample is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch snip of about 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equal mass of body hair may be used instead. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the first step of entering a sample into the lab's system. Tasks include confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial swift evaluation for abuse substances. Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most specimens, but positives require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening phase is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair tests are hard to falsify, leading to more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Historic insight: They offer patterns of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and personal growth rates.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
