Located in Rutledge, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5-2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored hair testing offerings.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method of drug screening. This method is increasingly being adopted by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts, preferring it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. The test's main advantage is its longer drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, with strict sample collection ensuring accuracy, although urine tests remain definitive for last five days' usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of these substances by embedding biological markers within the hair shaft as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage over a span of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, sufficient for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for the measurement. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers specifically to 'scalp hair.' 'Body hair' includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Lab processing for drug test outcomes involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the integration of a sample into the lab system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any data entry missing from an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substance misuse. Although screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive outcome must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples that appear positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration significantly lower than in other analyses (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Preparatory washing is performed on all presumptive positives when necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly evaluated in alignment with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Robust against tampering: Hair tests are notably difficult to compromise, ensuring a higher degree of accuracy.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It provides an overview of substance use patterns over time, beyond just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: A detection delay of roughly 5-7 days exists before substances become traceable in hair.
  • Costs: Hair analysis tends to be pricier than other substance testing options.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the focus is on the hair itself, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rutledge, AL, hair follicle testing proves its superiority over urine tests for several reasons. It offers enhanced detection accuracy, providing results that are more reliable and conclusive. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
