Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service in Section, Alabama. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analyses, accessible through our facilities in cities across the nation, all capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug examinations. Many businesses, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probationary services often rely on hair follicle tests. Their chief advantage is an extended detection timeline for drug use, generally lasting up to 90 days, conducted under observation, which is nearly impossible to falsify. Though, to test for drug use in the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to adulteration, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be considered admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to subvert: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
