In Shreve, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. We specialize in conducting both hair drug and alcohol tests, and our network of testing centers operates throughout all cities nationwide, ready to facilitate hair testing needs. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the scalp or body, is commonly required for most cases. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug screening methods. Numerous employers, the court system, and substance abuse counselors now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. For organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judiciary institutions, and persons on probation, hair follicle tests prove invaluable. The key advantage lies in their extended detection span for drug usage—presently up to 90 days—coupled with an observed collection method that is virtually tamper-proof. Yet, for determining drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a historical record of substance use by imbedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it enables up to a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment containing about 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For tests such as EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg hair specimen is advised. It is beneficial to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be acquired. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result generally includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab's system, which involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary analysis for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive results require Confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

A presumptively positive sample in the Screening phase involves further hair extraction from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Final Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing process prior to Confirmation as necessary. The integral laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair tests have the capability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is exceptionally difficult, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It reveals drug consumption patterns over time instead of recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: There is an approximate 5-7 day delay before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing styles.
  • Results variability: Differences like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
