Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Smoke Rise, Alabama. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is well-suited to your needs, and we have centers nationwide, including in every city, that can administer a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing options.

In recent times, the drug testing method has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, along with courts and probation participants, opt for these tests. The main advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, observed during collection, and extremely difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has established itself as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimum quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be utilized. Head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a specimen within a lab's system. This process comprises confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing remains the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation as per requirement. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Illustrates historical patterns: It provides an account of drug usage over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Smoke Rise, AL, the benefits are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, capturing a broader timeline of drug use with precision that urine tests struggle to match. This reliability makes hair follicle testing the preferred choice among agencies and employers aiming for stringent substance control policies and thorough historical substance use evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

In Smoke Rise, AL, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a game-changer. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, these tests give employers comprehensive insights into an individual's substance history. Such a broad timeline surpasses that of other tests, granting detailed overviews that aid in informed decision-making regarding an employee or applicant's long-term substance use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Smoke Rise, AL, minimize the potential for sample adulteration significantly. Unlike other testing methods that can be tampered with, hair tests offer a tamper-resistant alternative, ensuring the integrity of results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
