Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings right here in South Vinemont, Alabama. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in this method, coupled with a network of testing centers spanning all cities nationwide, ensures that a hair test is easily accessible. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for these tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol, and offer other tailored options.

In the past few years, utilizing hair follicle tests for drug detection has become increasingly popular. Many companies, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use these tests. The main advantage of a hair drug test lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation to prevent tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug usage within the last five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair can capture a prolonged history of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs that lasts up to approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale, we advise weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift analysis for substance abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to rule out drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen should be confirmed to be valid in a court of law. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can spot drug usage for up to 90 days, which is longer compared to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • History provision: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over extended periods, not just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It roughly takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: It's often termed as "hair follicle tests", yet the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in South Vinemont, AL, are compelling. Hair follicle tests detect drugs with greater accuracy and reliability. Their ability to reveal substance use from a longer time frame provides a detailed insight into an individual's drug history. In contrast, urine tests may not offer the same level of precision and historical exposure detection.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in South Vinemont, AL, provides an enlarged detection window, capturing substance use for up to 90 days. This extended period allows employers to gain a thorough view of an individual's drug usage over time. By providing a broader snapshot of substance history, it supports making informed hiring and employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
