Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stockton, Alabama. For your hair or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers Nationwide for conducting hair tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests may detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored options.

Lately, drug testing often incorporates a hair follicle drug test approach. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by entities with no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Hair tests provide a longer detection window for drug use, often up to 90 days, using a supervised collection method, making it hard to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain the best for drugs used in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a vital resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within its strands. When sourced close to the scalp, it can detect substances over an estimated three-month span. Hair is easy to gather, hard to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In cases where scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, it’s specifically about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a swift preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While screening is cost-effective for clearing most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that are likely positive during Screening will require secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests likely positive during Screening, additional hair is withdrawn from the original specimen for Extraction. This step involves isolating drugs from hair, although at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All likely positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It outlines a timeline of drug use, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of catching recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
