Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Sumiton, Alabama. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have facilities across all cities Nationwide with the capability to conduct a hair test. Generally, patients should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on the head or body for testing. Hair analysis tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug detection methods. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are popular among employers with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and those overseeing probation. The major advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended drug detection window, spanning up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests still outperform for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol activity. The hair captures a long-term chronicle of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in its fiber as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair signifies other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to negate drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for courtroom viability. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to undertake.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
