In Summit, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and can conduct tests at centers in every city nationwide. Generally needing 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, these tests assess drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly used over standard urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Zero-tolerance companies, legal authorities, and probation officers prefer hair tests due to a broader detection window, usually up to 90 days. These tests, collected under supervised conditions, are difficult to tamper with, though urine tests remain superior for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil size) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. “Head hair” specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas “body hair” includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to falsify, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: Capable of depicting a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the test in fact examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle with urine tests in Summit, AL, hair testing demonstrates superior accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer an extended detection window, capturing a comprehensive view of substance use over a longer period. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to a short detection time, hair tests provide a 90-day history, offering employers a stronger basis for decision-making.

Hair follicle testing is nearly tamper-proof, ensuring results are authentic and trustworthy. Whereas urine tests are susceptible to adulteration, hair tests offer steadfast integrity, which is crucial for entities with strict drug-free policies. Employers can count on the precise results provided by hair testing.

In Summit, AL, hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection window, far surpassing traditional tests. Able to detect drugs for up to 90 days, this method provides employers with a detailed insight into an individual's substance history. Such a comprehensive view is invaluable for supporting informed decisions in hiring and maintaining workplace safety.

The extended window allows employers to monitor not just recent substance use but also a longer history. This proven method stands as a critical tool for those needing to verify consistent drug-free behavior over a significant time frame, offering peace of mind and enhanced oversight capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
