Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Suttle, Alabama. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffice. We analyze hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine tests. Used by firms enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation services, hair tests are favored for their extensive detection ability of up to 90 days and high reliability. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing has evolved into an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronicling medium for drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is harvested near the scalp, it offers a detection period for alcohol and drugs of up to around three months. Hair samples are straightforward to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is required to obtain 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for standard testing and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or those with more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is necessary. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used instead. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s infrastructure. This step involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and correctly sent, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid analysis for controlled substance presence. Although Screening serves as a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive indication must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require an additional stage of confirmation.

In cases where a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations much subtler than those found in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluids), which underscores why hair drug screening is recognized as highly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive findings from screening is performed through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing treatment prior to confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screening can register drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Complexity in cheating: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate results of a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides an account of drug consumption over time as opposed to solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become discernible in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair shade and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," these evaluations actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
