Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sylvan Springs, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is supported by testing centers located across all cities nationwide. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically necessary. Our hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods are increasingly incorporating hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair drug testing over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, as well as courts and probation offices, are turning to hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window, which can trace substance use up to 90 days. These tests also feature an observed collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive record of substance use by absorbing markers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled close to the roots, hair can reveal substance consumption for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of hair, consisting of about 200 strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the roots, yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond ten panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a specimen within the laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although it’s an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be valid in legal contexts. Any sample that tests positive in the Screening phase necessitates further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves isolating substances from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair analysis is the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive undergo a washing process before verification as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: Hair testing can show a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
