Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Tennant, Alabama. For those in need of hair substance or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are required. Hair analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular as a method for detection. Many companies, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over regular urine ones. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judges, and probation officers commonly select hair tests. One key advantage is its extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to three months, collected under supervision, making deceit nearly impossible. Yet, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain preferred for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is preferred. We advise measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By "head hair," we mean only scalp hair. Meanwhile, "body hair" includes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the laboratory's system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective solution for eliminating drug presence in most samples, any positive screen must be verified for court acceptability. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive result during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples marked presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid). This makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples require washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection span.
  • Challenges in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur greater costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
