Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Thach, Alabama. For those requiring drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is backed by a network of centers nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown, or body when necessary, must be 1.5 to 2 inches. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased, becoming a preferred method over urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists. Organizations enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation systems favor these tests. They offer advantages like an extended 90-day detection window, closely monitored collection, and resilience against tampering, though urine tests remain superior for drug detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair delivers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary stages are involved in laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial sample processing within a laboratory's framework. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage from most samples, a positive Screening requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test tentatively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
