Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tidmore Bend, Alabama. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing spans Nationwide with centers in every city, ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Various drug, alcohol/ETG or tailored hair testing options are available.

The shift towards hair follicle drug screening has grown prominent for drug testing in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors often favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug rules, along with courts and probation supervisors, prefer hair testing. Its major benefit is a longer detection scope, reaching up to 90 days, observed during collection, and almost immune to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the recent 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide detection for alcohol and drugs for up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional components, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advocated. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When referencing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The sequence of steps in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This means ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use on the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening will need further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration level compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing more complex to execute.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited window.
  • Hard to tamper with: It's quite challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a trace of drug utilization over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically costs more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Typically called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
