Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle screening services in Trafford, Alabama. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we operate testing facilities across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing services.

In recent times, there's been a shift towards hair follicle drug tests in drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. This method supports organizations with strict drug-free mandates, the judicial system, and probation monitoring. Hair tests are favored for their longer detection windows—up to 90 days— and minimal chances for tampering. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it captures markers of alcohol and other substances within its fibers, creating a long-term record. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the possibility of tampering is minimal, and shipping is convenient.

An ideal sample for analysis involves a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG enhancements and/or screenings surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be obtained. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first integrated into the lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes a preliminary check for substance abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and set for Extraction. Here, the drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples that test presumptive positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug exams reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical record: They provide insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Detectability in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
