Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Triana, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol assessments. Our expertise in hair analysis is available nationwide, ensuring widespread access to our specialized testing services. For accurate results, hair length on the crown should be between 1.5 and 2 inches, but other body hair may be used. We provide options for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug screening in recent years. Both employers and legal authorities increasingly prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method caters to zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements, with detection periods extending to 90 days, ensuring a more reliable and tamper-proof process. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended archive of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair shaft's fibers. Collected close to the scalp, hair can capture up to roughly 3 months of drug and alcohol detection. It's easy to collect, challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in entering the sample into a laboratory system. This comprises verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary check for abusive drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in judicial settings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is drawn from the original specimen and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is incredibly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
