Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Waldo, Alabama. Specializing in hair testing, we provide services across the nation through numerous testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown (or body hair) is needed. Our hair tests are suitable for drug, alcohol/ETG analysis, and other custom options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, replacing traditional urine tests. They are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies and those requiring probation monitoring. The test covers a 90-day drug use history, is conducted under supervision, and is nearly tamper-proof, though urine tests remain accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Appreciated for its effectiveness, hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended historical view of drug and alcohol use. When harvested from near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol activity over a span of about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. In situations where scalp hair isn’t available, equivalent body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages involved in the laboratory procedure of processing a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary and economical test to identify drug abuse. Although cost-effective and ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs additional confirmation to stand as court-admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify results: The complexity of altering a hair drug test ensures greater accuracy in results.
  • Reflects past usage patterns: It reveals a trend of drug use over an extended timeline, rather than recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inadequate for recent detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be detectable in hair after use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug testing is pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
