Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Weogufka, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, when it comes to hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist, boasting testing centers in all Nationwide cities capable of handling hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly choosing hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are suited for employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation officers. The main advantage is the extensive detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection, making it challenging to falsify. Urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary items, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If head hair isn't an option, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we talk about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into a lab’s system. This step checks if the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Screening offers an economical means to exclude drug presence in most samples, yet a positive screen requires confirmation for court validity. Samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening need further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug testing presents a significant challenge methodologically.

Any positive Screening outcome must be confirmed by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples get washed before the necessary confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is comprehensively reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing reveals drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting shorter detection periods with urine tests.
  • Challenging to fabricate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Provides usage pattern: It outlines drug usage over a span of time, not just recent abuse.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests”, the test examines the strand of hair, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
