Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examination services in Woodstock, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we have you covered with our specialty in hair testing and testing facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed for reliable hair testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years as a method for conducting drug analyses. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly request hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period for drug usage, up to 90 days. The tests are collected under careful observation, minimizing manipulation chances, though urine tests remain more precise for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust tool for detecting substance use, hair testing utilizes growing hair fibers to trap biomarkers, offering a historical record of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month history for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those over ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable, best measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

In lab processing of drug test results, four major steps occur: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is introduced into the lab's system, which involves checking the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a Lab Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers a swift preliminary check for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive necessitate further confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is gathered from the original sample for Extraction, extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or saliva), making it the most challenging form of drug screening of hair.

Confirmation of positive screens is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair badge and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can find drug use up to 90 days back, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's exceedingly tough to cheat a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Shows historical use: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
