Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Ambler, Alaska. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this area and have centers nationwide to facilitate it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests can analyze for drugs, ETG, or offer other hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been used for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer them over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by entities with strict drug policies, by courts, and for those on probation. The main advantage is their extended detection period which is up to 90 days, and the fact that they are observed, making them hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol usage, hair testing captures a prolonged record by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a growing strand. Collecting hair near the scalp can allow for a detection duration of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp end will provide 100mg, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and/or examinations over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, court-admissible results require confirmation of a positive screen. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening mandate an additional confirmation.

If Screening reveals presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, hair undergoes drug extraction at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is highly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outputs is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a pre-confirmation wash as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a narrower detection span.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Evading a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use across a period, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the label "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
