Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Chisana, Alaska. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair analysis, with nationwide testing centers ready to conduct hair exams. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for substance screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and those on probation often utilize these tests. The main advantage is a detection period of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of substance use by incorporating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it offers around a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches encompassing about 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test analysis in the lab comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the sample's initial integration into a lab’s framework. This entails checking that the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation to detect drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug usage in the majority of cases, a confirmatory test is necessary for a positive result to be legally valid. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo subsequent verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is processed from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are pre-washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower window.
  • Cheat-proof: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to tampering, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, unlike detecting only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Substances require approximately 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
