Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cooper Landing, Alaska. If a hair or alcohol drug test is needed, our specialization in hair testing ensures accessibility through our testing centers located in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair samples facilitate analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly choosing hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, courtroom mandates, and probation requirements. Their main advantage is an extended drug-use detection window—up to 90 days—accompanied by observable collection and reduced fraud risk. Nonetheless, for the immediate detection of drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective instrument in identifying the consumption of alcohol and drugs. Hair archives a prolonged record of substances by ensnaring biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. If taken close to the scalp, it can yield up to a quarter-year detection window for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An inch-and-a-half section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for preliminary tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional requirements, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential procedures included in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing phase of integrating a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry unprovided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for the majority of specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptance. Samples marked presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample be labeled presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Drugs in this phase are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screened results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples indicated as presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests recognize drug use for upwards of 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more credible results.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a drug use pattern spanning a period rather than recent consumption alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
