Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Dot Lake, Alaska. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert with facilities in every city nationwide equipped to perform hair tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair growth in the crown or on the body suffices for testing. Analysis options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and personalized hair tests.

Recently, drug testing strategies have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation programs often rely on hair tests. These tests offer a prolonged detection window of drug use, with a typical reach of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and minimal risk of tampering. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair provides an extended history of drug and alcohol use. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG and additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be obtained. Our reference to head hair pertains only to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, issuing a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging to perform.

To verify any positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are utilized. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Attributes such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly mistaken as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
