Acclaimed Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance screening in Elim, Alaska. If a drug or alcohol hair test is required, Acclaimed Drug Testing is an expert in this field and houses testing centers across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. Hair screenings can detect various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, with tailored testing options available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug screening has increasingly become the preferred method. Employers, judiciary, and substance use experts opt for hair testing over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and supervised individuals. The major advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation, and its resistance to manipulation. Nonetheless, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective instrument for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair, it captures an extensive record of drug and alcohol usage. Hair obtained near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug intake spanning roughly a 90-day duration. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to alteration, and convenient for transportation.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) from the scalp offers 100mg, an optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG and extended tests beyond 10 panels, acquiring a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we strictly refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types (such as facial, axillary, and more).

Process Overview

The key four stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initiation into the laboratory’s system. This step checks the sample’s seal and shipping correctness, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid inspection for drug presence. This cost-effective method clears most samples, but positive screens must undergo confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. Presumptive positive screens necessitate a secondary conclusiveness check.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage separates drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples initially positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for a duration up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection timeline.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers retrospective data: It furnishes an overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personalized growth differences can impact the concentration of drug derivatives in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
