Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug testing services in Fox, Alaska. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, our expertise lies in hair follicle testing, with facilities available in every city nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over the years, the preference in drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle methods. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probationers. The key advantage is its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's difficult to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample size for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it’s specifically scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive result needs Confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are potentially positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to Confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not limited to recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: It needs about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Though typically termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fox, AK, hair follicle testing effectively surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection efficiency. Hair tests reveal drug use over a more extended period, giving a comprehensive look at usage patterns, unlike the limited window of urine tests, enhancing their reliability in various contexts.

Employers benefit from a more thorough assessment of an individual’s history with substances, thus reducing the chances of missing long-term usage, which urine tests might overlook.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
