Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hughes, Alaska. Those needing hair drug or alcohol tests can rely on our expertise in hair analyses, available nationwide in various cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required for these tests, which include assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more widespread. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists increasingly favor this over conventional urine tests due to its longer detection window—up to 90 days—collection under observation, and resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (analogous to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be sourced. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing within a laboratory’s system, which includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is gathered from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Any positive Screening result must be confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the review of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection potential: Hair drug tests can spot drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests usually have a shorter range of detection.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally tough, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical details: It can depict a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur more cost compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
