Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Juneau, Alaska. For those seeking hair-related drug or alcohol evaluations, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analysis, with testing facilities available across the nation; they are equipped to conduct hair analyses. Generally, a sample from at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing needs tailored to the client.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug evaluations. A multitude of employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse authorities are favoring hair drug evaluations over traditional urine tests. Employers maintaining stringent no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers employ hair follicle tests. These tests provide the significant advantage of extended drug use detection timelines, often up to 90 days, executed under supervised conditions, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, for identifying drug use within a prior five-day window, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for monitoring drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow, hair offers a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of approximately three months. Collecting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) from the scalp offers a 100mg sample, ideal for both screening and confirming results. In cases involving EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferable. It is advisable to use a jeweler's scale to ensure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be provided. For head hair, the reference is strictly to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory is divided into four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first integrated into the lab's system. This involves checking that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, providing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any missing data that isn't included in the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary test to identify drug abuse. While this step is cost-efficient for dismissing drug usage in most samples, any positive Screening result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is acquired from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. This phase retrieves drugs from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods like urine or oral fluid, affirming hair drug tests as the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation phase for any positive Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed as required. The entire testing operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reports historical usage: It documents a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
