Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Kwigillingok, Alaska. If a hair-based drug or alcohol examination is required, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by our nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for drug analysis. It is increasingly demanded by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, such as employers, courts, and probation individuals, favor hair tests. The chief advantage lies in its longer detection duration for drugs, usually up to 90 days post-use, observed collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers of alcohol and drugs as they grow, offering a long-term consumption record. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a usage history for up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or testing beyond 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample’s entry into a lab’s systems, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data required not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for drugs. Although Screening effectively rules out drug usage in most cases at a low cost, any positive result needs court-valid confirmation. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample is set aside for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insight into a pattern of drug consumption rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug testing costs more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
