Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Larsen Bay, Alaska. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities across the nation, including cities nationwide, to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. It's now preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over the standard urine test. Employers enforcing strict no-drug-use rules, courts, and probation services often opt for hair testing. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of developing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, alteration is somewhat hard, and it is convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of processing a sample within a laboratory’s database. It involves verifying the secure sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for abuse drugs. It is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen demands confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical profiling: It can display a drug usage pattern over a period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't spot recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair testing methods generally cost more than others.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
