Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Meyers Chuck, Alaska. If you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair testing, providing services across cities Nationwide. Hair from your head or body, 1.5 to 2 inches long, is typically viable. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of the standard procedure for drug assessment in recent years. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine evaluations. These tests suit companies with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation conditions. A significant advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with almost zero chances of tampering. Still, for recent drug use detection within a 5-day span, urine tests retain accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data input beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening is an initial swift test for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples yielding a preliminary positive result during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results are washed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical insights: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
