Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Montana and Alaska. For hair drug or alcohol testing needs, our company excels in providing these services with testing locations available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required, allowing doctors to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor options based on client needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity as a drug testing tool. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer this testing method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance strategies, judicial systems, and probation cases. With a detection time extending up to 90 days, captured via direct observation, hair tests are hard to circumvent. Yet, for drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair maintains an extended timeline of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for substances. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing steps for a lab drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is introduced into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment was conducted correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial examination for substances. Although Screening serves as an economical method for eliminating drug use in most samples, confirmation is required for results to be legally recognized. Samples with positive indications in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this step, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), establishing hair drug testing as one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Positive indications from Screening require Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples showing positive results are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug assessment is highly challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It supplies a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair coloration and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the surface

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
