Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nome, Alaska. For those needing a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise in hair testing ensures accurate results, with testing centers conveniently located nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. We provide analyses for various substances including drugs and alcohol, as well as tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the utilization of hair follicle drug tests has steadily increased. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor hair follicle tests due to their extensive detection period, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and are nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug use, within the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair, ideal for initial tests and verifications. For tests such as EtG, expanded panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be insufficient, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample within a lab’s system. It involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assay for drug substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive results need further confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug evaluations are difficult to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: This test can identify patterns of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drug presence in hair is detectable only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug evaluations incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Variation in findings: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drugs within hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing presents numerous advantages over traditional urine tests in Nome, AK. Accuracy and Reliability are notable benefits, as hair tests offer a longer detection window and are less susceptible to tampering. As a result, it is a superior choice for many organizations seeking precise and dependable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
