In Red Dog Mine, Alaska, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair analysis, our centers are available across all major cities nationwide. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is typically required. Hair testing can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly prominent in drug testing practices. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests, it's used for zero-tolerance policies and probation scenarios. Its advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days and an observed collection process that minimizes cheating risks. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. The strands hold a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol ingestion by embedding biomarkers in their composition. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 90-day window of detection for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is limited, and transporting is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for both initial assessment and confirmation. For EtG tests, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is recommended. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount from body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifies scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

Four primary steps define the lab procedures for processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample processing within a lab’s system. This entails verifying the sample’s seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for drug presence. This is a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug use in many samples, yet any positive findings require further confirmation for court validity. Samples that show a presumptive positive at Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is pulled from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

A positive Screening result is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair norms and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required before substances become apparent in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs greater costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Disparities in results: Variability in factors like hair coloration and individual hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
