In Silvertip, Alaska, Accredited Drug Testing proficiently provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. When in need of drug or alcohol tests, you can rely on our national network of testing centers. Hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches are typically required, and tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity over recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary contexts prefer them due to enhanced detection—lasting up to 90 days—and observable collection processes, making them nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly 90 days. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as appropriate. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • High reliability: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Historical perspective: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
