Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Standard, Alaska. If you're seeking an alcohol or drug test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this method, and our nationwide centers, including all cities, can conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method. Many employers, judicial systems, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse now favor hair testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies in workplaces, courts, and for probationers, offering a detection window up to 90 days. While effective at detecting long-term use, urine tests remain the best choice for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands store a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extensive tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair only. Body hair denotes any other type of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a particular LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it is cost-efficient for negating drug use across most samples, a positive screening needs confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive in screening must undergo an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lesser concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests a challenging procedure.

Confirming any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical overview: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over some time, beyond just the immediate past.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" being used frequently, the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Standard, AK, hair follicle testing offers an advantage over traditional urine testing by providing superior detection accuracy. While urine tests are limited to short-term substance detection, hair tests capture drug use for up to 90 days, ensuring a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's history.

This method's high reliability stems from its enduring detection period and resistance to tampering, solidifying its standing as a preferred choice for workplaces aiming for stringent substance use policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Standard, AK allows detection of drug use up to 90 days, offering employers a more extensive review of an individual's substance use history. This extended window surpasses urine tests, which only reveal recent consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
