In Sterling, AK, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, their expertise ensures precise results. Nationwide centers make testing convenient, needing 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair. Hair testing checks for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity in recent times for effective drug testing. Many organizations now prefer it over urine tests. It's favored for zero-tolerance policies and among probation programs for its longer detection period, typically up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, it's observed directly, minimizing tampering risks. However, for recent drug use detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake owing to the entrapment of biomarkers within the hair’s growing strands. When hair is clipped close to the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use over roughly a three-month period. The hair sample is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, about the thickness of a #2 pencil and containing approximately 200 strands, will weigh 100mg—ideal for both initial tests and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. ‘Head hair’ specifically refers to scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory drug test workflow comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample enters the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

The Screening phase is a preliminary test for drugs of misuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive Screening requires confirmation to be valid legally. Samples that are presumptively positive must undergo further verification.

If presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other tests (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug tests particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected of being positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, offering a more extended detection period than urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, improving result reliability.
  • Reveals consumption history: These tests can illustrate patterns of drug use over time as opposed to just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable for recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary due to hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
