Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Wales, Alaska. For individuals in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, we excel in providing such testing, with facilities available in all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used for testing. Hair samples are evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly favored as the method of choice for drug screening. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse consultants demand hair drug tests over regular urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as probationary programs, rely on hair follicle tests. The major advantage is their extended detection span, covering drug use for up to 90 days, and due to the direct collection process, results are nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for assessing recent drug use within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of chemical and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a three-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for examination and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers exclusively to scalp hair. 'Body hair' pertains to all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into the laboratory's framework. This involves ensuring the sample has been correctly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift analysis for illicit drugs. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, confirmation of a positive result is necessary for legal acceptance. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require further conclusive verification.

If Screening indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably complex.

Positive Screening outcomes are verified through methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity go through a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to cheat: It is extremely hard to alter a hair drug test, thus ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand and not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
