Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Willow, Alaska. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing, with numerous testing centers coast to coast prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific test requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become standard for drug testing. They're becoming a preferred choice over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, individuals on probation favor these tests. The main advantage is a longer window of detection for drugs, lasting up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, these tests are difficult to falsify, although urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term details of drug and alcohol usage by holding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of nearly three months for drug and alcohol use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent body hair sample may be taken. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. All other bodily hair, including facial and axillary, falls under body hair.

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing of a sample in the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for substance abuse. Screening is a low-cost method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, but a positive result demands confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more strands are separated from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Tampering difficulty: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thereby producing more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It can indicate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent usage: It normally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Willow, AK, hair follicle testing is superior to urine tests for numerous reasons. One key benefit is its extensive detection range. While urine tests only capture recent use, hair tests offer a detailed history over months, offering a broader perspective on substance use. Accuracy also stands out as a hair test strength, pinpointing past usage more reliably than traditional urine testing methods.

Additionally, hair tests minimize the risk of tampering. Sample integrity is maintained with a hair test, unlike urine tests, which are more susceptible to manipulation. Employers and legal authorities gain confidence knowing results are less prone to manipulation. Together, these advantages make hair testing the smarter choice for those requiring thoroughness and security in drug testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Willow, AK, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing provides significant advantages. Unlike other tests, hair analysis offers up to 90 days of historical substance data. This longer timeframe allows employers to gain a holistic view of current and potential employees' drug habits, ensuring better-informed hiring decisions.

The comprehensive nature of hair follicle testing establishes it as a powerful tool in understanding drug use over time. Employers benefit from insights into behavioral patterns rather than only recent consumption. Accurate and historically grounded, hair testing stands as an excellent resource for scrutinizing past substance usage, supporting more responsible workforce management.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Willow, AK, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant method to assess drug use. Compared to other testing forms, a hair sample cannot easily be altered or contaminated, ensuring authenticity of results. This quality makes hair testing a reliable choice for anyone seeking to mitigate manipulation risks of samples.

Employers and legal institutions benefit from the secure, verifiable nature of hair testing. Knowing adulteration is minimized provides peace of mind that results reflect true patterns of substance intake. When accuracy and tamper-proof integrity are crucial, hair follicle testing emerges as a frontrunner in the domain of substance evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
