Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ajo, Arizona. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in such testing, with centers across all cities nationally ready to perform these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at your crown, though other body hair may be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other customized needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in recent years. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers utilize these tests due to their primary advantage: a longer drug detection period, usually up to 90 days, with a monitored collection, making deception nearly impossible. Yet, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing is becoming increasingly significant. By encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand, hair provides an extended history of alcohol and drug usage. When hair is taken near the scalp, it offers up to about a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advocated. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair cannot be gathered, a comparable quantity of body hair can be substituted. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step confirms correct sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient and can exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can verify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a smaller detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is quite difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers an account of drug usage over time, beyond just recent episodes.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often carry a higher cost than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
