Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Avra Valley, Arizona. Need a hair or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with centers available throughout the Nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body can be used. These tests can evaluate drug use, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing selections.

In recent years, the increasing method for drug testing has included hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists opt for hair testing over standard urine analysis. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courtrooms, and probationary individuals often employ hair follicle tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection span—up to 90 days—during a monitored collection, making it hard to deceive. Yet, to detect recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair provides a detailed timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by holding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, taken from approximately 200 hairs near the scalp, is comparable in size to a #2 pencil, and provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing of the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. In referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four essential processes in laboratory drug test analysis are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the initial reception of a sample into the lab’s system. This process checks that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test positive in Screening require secondary validation.

For positives found in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most complex methods to execute.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug screenings can detect drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Cheating difficulty: Manipulating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not limited to just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically bear higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests stand out against traditional urine screenings in accuracy and reliability throughout Avra Valley, AZ. The comprehensive detection abilities of hair testing provide users with a reliable account of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
