Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bouse, Arizona. For those in need of a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with facilities in all cities Nationwide that accommodate hair evaluation. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is usually sufficient. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored examination options.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments are becoming more common for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often demand a hair assessment over a standard urine analysis. Hair evaluations are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair assessments is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, observed during collection and very difficult to falsify. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method in detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair analysis offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to a three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and transport-friendly.

A 1.5-inch section of nearly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal quantity for both initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It's beneficial to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same amount of body hair can be collected. Specifically, head hair denotes only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a lab drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's preliminary integration into the laboratory system. It entails ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data particulars absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for drugs of abuse, cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples. However, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

At Screening's notion of a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the main sample for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair in significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative strategies (urine or oral fluid), marking hair testing as the toughest technique to execute.

Positive screening confirmations employ GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples initially shown as positive undergo washing if deemed necessary before confirming. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire procedure is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests' shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating deterrence: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption data: It outlines drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Ineffectiveness for recent usage: Hair shows drug presence after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier relative to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variations influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
