Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carrizo, Arizona. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screenings, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in various cities nationwide available to conduct these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly supplemented traditional drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of this testing method is its prolonged detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, when detecting recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are now recognized as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, the hair can reveal about a 3-month period of substance history. The process of gathering hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was correctly packaged and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening do need further verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptive as positive undergo a cleansing process before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which serve a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, leading to more reliable results.
  • Shows usage history: It can outline a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not ideal for recent detection: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are usually pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand above the scalp, not the follicle beneath it.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
