Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing thorough hair follicle drug testing in Casas Adobes, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analyses. Our network of centers across the Nation is equipped to administer these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required on the scalp or body. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted for drug screenings. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer this method over urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation favor this test. It detects drug use up to 90 days ago, under direct supervision, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now viewed as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term alcohol and drug histories by embedding biomarkers within the strand's fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month period for alcohol and drug usage. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair covers all other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial entry into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample’s secure seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data entry not available via electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that show presumptively positive results in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than with other methods (like urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentrations found in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
