Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Catalina, Arizona. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, offering facilities across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, or body hair may suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific testing needs.

In recent years, the trend in drug testing methods has increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. More employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug testing over conventional urine tests. Employers with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services commonly use hair follicle screenings. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection making it virtually cheat-proof. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture biomarkers over time, creating a lengthy timeline of alcohol and substance history. Hair obtained near the scalp can reveal a detection period of around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) cut nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For add-ons like EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advocate using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. In instances where scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The comprehensive processing of a drug test result at a laboratory involves four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial cursory examination for substances. While economic for dismissing drug use in most cases, any positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that presumptively test positive require subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmations for any positive screenings are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Moreover, all presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. Every step in the laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Captures historical usage: It reveals a long-term pattern of drug consumption, unlike tests that only show recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
